A Vision Born from Wholeness
OUR STORY
A retreat shaped by the moon, rooted in nature and guided by the timeless wisdom of the elements. Soul Moon Retreat is where Dutch Colonial elegance meets Wabi-Sabi soul and where you are invited to connect with yourself through somatic experiences. Our villa harmonises the timeless elegance of Dutch Colonial design with the quiet soulful essence of Wabi Sabi – an approach that invites us to experience the world not through the logical mind, but through the feeling heart. In this union, the space becomes more than aesthetic it becomes a sanctuary where you are gently guided back to wholeness, reconnecting with the authenticity and timeless beauty that resides within yourself.

Soul Moon Retreat began with a personal journey. Our founder, an integrative clinical counsellor and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, understands what it means to rebuild - to return to wholeness after life's challenges. After a successful corporate career and a transformative path through motherhood and healing, she envisioned a space where others could do the same.
Not a prescriptive wellness retreat with rules and schedules. But a sanctuary of possibility. A place where you can simply be, and in that being, find your own way back to yourself

Soul Moon Retreat is perched on the serene shores of Koggala Lake - one of Sri Lanka's largest natural lakes, stretching 13km from north to south. This waterfront sanctuary offers uninterrupted views, abundant birdlife, and the gentle rhythm of lake life. It's a setting that invites stillness, reflection, and deep connection to nature.

Koggala Lake Is Calling
The Soul Moon Retreat Story
As told by our founder
Before Soul Moon Retreat existed, there was only a piece of land - and a feeling I couldn't shake.
I had been visiting Sri Lanka for many years, drawn to its incredible diversity, ancient culture and deep connection to nature. Yet Koggala felt different.
I first discovered Koggala Lake while visiting the nearby home and museum of Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's most beloved writers and cultural figures. I was fascinated by his stories and his dedication to preserving the traditions, folklore and simple beauty of rural Sri Lankan life.
But it was the boat ride across the lake that changed everything.
As the boat moved quietly across the water, I watched the light dance across the lake. Everything seemed to slow down. There was a stillness that reached somewhere deep inside me - a feeling of peace, spaciousness and, strangely, of coming home.
Six months later, I stood on the land that would become Soul Moon Retreat.
Across the water was Madol Duwa Island, the very island that inspired Wickramasinghe's beloved novel of the same name.
I cried.
In that moment, I knew this place held something special.
Koggala is also a place of convergence - where the fresh water of the lake meets the salt water of the ocean. When two waters meet, they create a unique energetic zone: a meeting of opposites, where different currents come together and something new is formed.
To me, this meeting point feels like an energetic portal between our inner emotional world and the vast unknown - between the inward flow of fresh water and the expansive, collective nature of the ocean.
It became a beautiful metaphor for healing.
The renewing nature of fresh water meets the grounding, protective energy of the ocean. Just as we bring together the different parts of ourselves - body and mind, past and present, strength and vulnerability - something begins to transform.
Soul Moon Retreat was born from this feeling.
A sanctuary on the water.
A place to pause, reconnect and restore.
A place where different currents meet, where the moon meets the water, and where you may find your own way home to yourself.
Our stretch of the lake is home to several islands, each with its own character:
- Madol Duwa Island – The most famous. Sitting directly opposite Soul Moon, this island inspired Wickramasinghe's beloved novel. You can see it from our deck, a constant reminder of adventure, innocence, and the magic of childhood.
- Temple Island – Home to a Buddhist temple, reachable by boat. A place of quiet reverence.
- Bird Island – A sanctuary for the lake's abundant birdlife. Kingfishers, eagles, and egrets call this home.
- Cinnamon Islands – Small, fragrant, and wild.
These islands are not just landmarks. They are the soul of this place - the reason I stayed, the reason Soul Moon exists.

Sustainability
Powered by the Sun
We run on solar energy. It's our way of respecting the environment that hosts us. What this means for you:
- Clean, renewable energy throughout your stay
- A gentle reminder to be mindful of usage - avoid running multiple high-energy appliances (hair dryers, kettles, air conditioners) at the same time
- Your comfort matters, and so does the planet. A little awareness keeps the energy flowing for everyone.
Water Conservation
Sri Lanka is a land of water - lakes, rivers, rain, and ocean. We honour it by using it wisely.
- Low-flow fixtures throughout the villa
- Mindful landscaping that works with the local climate
- Guests are invited to be water-conscious during their stay
Rooted in Kathaluma
Soul Moon Retreat doesn't just sit in this village - it belongs to it.
- All staff are local - from our on-site host to the cook to the gardeners and cleaners
- Breakfast is prepared by our neighbour
- Local craftspeople built our furniture, woven our rattan, and shaped our space
- Community support - we source locally whenever possible and contribute to the village economy
When you stay with us, you support the community that welcomes you.
Crafted by Sri Lankan Hands
Every piece of furniture, every textile, every finish tells a story of local craftsmanship.
• Wood: Sustainably sourced, handcrafted by local artisans
• Rattan & Wicker: Woven by skilled makers in nearby villages
• Stone: Locally quarried, finished by Sri Lankan stonemasons
• Textiles: Natural fibers (cotton, linen, jute) from local producers
• Brass Fixtures: Hand-finished by regional craftspeople
No mass production. No imported factory goods. Just authentic, soulful Sri Lankan craftsmanship.
Built to Last
Sustainability isn't just about energy - it's about creating spaces that endure.
Our Colonial Dutch + Wabi-Sabi fusion is designed for timelessness:
- Durable materials (concrete, stone, solid wood)
- Timeless aesthetic that won't date
- Quality craftsmanship meant to last generations
Nothing disposable. Everything intentional.
Small Choices, Big Impact
- Reusable glass bottles provided for water (filtered, safe, delicious)
- Minimal single-use plastics throughout the property
- Composting where possible
- Thoughtful purchasing - we buy what we need, not what we want
Our Commitment
We're on a journey. Sustainability is a practice, not a destination. We're always looking for better ways to care for the land, support our community, and reduce our footprint.

List of Services
-
The Form of Dutch ColonialItem Link List Item 1
At Soul Moon Retreat, we honour the enduring legacy of Sri Lanka's Dutch Colonial architectural heritage — a design language shaped by climate, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to place and history. It represents the grounding and structural essence of the villa, offering a sense of strength, order, and permanence.
Clean lines, balanced proportions, and functional simplicity create spaces that feel timeless and inviting. Natural teak timber, wicker, and rattan bring warmth and texture, while handcrafted details are expressed with restraint, allowing the integrity of the materials and the skill of local artisans to speak for themselves. Rather than recreating the past, we seek to honour its wisdom. The Dutch Colonial form provides a foundation of strength, balance, and stewardship—a quiet reflection of the relationship between architecture, landscape, and time.
It is a reminder that true beauty is not only found in what is created, but in what endures.
-
The Soul of Wabi SabiItem Link List Item 2
At Soul Moon Retreat, we embrace the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi — the gentle and receptive counterpart to the villa's architectural form. It is the spirit that softens structure, inviting simplicity, authenticity, and a deep acceptance of impermanence.
Gentle imperfections, weathered textures, and the ever-changing play of light remind us that nothing in nature is flawless, yet everything belongs. Here, you are invited to slow down, reconnect with the rhythms of the earth, and discover the quiet wholeness that emerges when we stop striving for perfection and simply allow ourselves to be. The villa quietly embodies this philosophy in every room, every texture, and every view across the waters of Koggala Lake.
It is a reminder that nothing is permanent, nothing is perfect, and nothing is incomplete.
Together, these styles create a space that feels both grounded and elegant, inviting you to slow down and engage your senses.
-
Ayurvedic & Feng Shui HarmonyItem Link List Item 3
Each of our three bedrooms is themed around an Ayurvedic dosha - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha - and aligned with Feng Shui principles. This isn't just interior design; it's energetic design.
- Crystals selected for their healing properties (amethyst, smoky quartz, clear quartz)
- Incense chosen to balance each dosha's unique qualities (cinammon, sandalwood, jasmine)
- Colour palettes that calm, ground, or uplift
- Intention cards to guide your personal practice
- All bedrooms equipped with an Ora Sound Machine, dedicated to help you calm and regulate the nervous system with solfeggio frequencies as an alternative to white noise
The result? A space that works with you, supporting your journey toward balance whether you're aware of it or not.

Our Ethos
Wholeness,Not Wellness
At Soul Moon Retreat, we don't prescribe. We don't schedule. We don't tell you how to feel better.
Instead, we offer a container. A beautifully designed, deeply peaceful container where you can:
Disappear from the rush of the world.
Connect with yourself on your own terms.
Choose from a menu of somatic experiences if you wish
- or nothing at all.
And rest in the knowledge that healing happens in its own time.
This is a place of wholeness. A place where soul meets brain meets body. A place with no judgment, no pressure, and a very good book collection.
Rooted in Sri Lanka
Soul Moon Retreat is not a foreign concept dropped onto Sri Lankan soil. It was born here. Built by local hands. Furnished by local craftspeople. Cared for by local hearts.
We honour the land it's built on.
Koggala Lake has held stories for centuries - of fishermen, of writers, of families, of pilgrims. Madol Duwa Island has watched over this shore long before we arrived. We are guests here, as much as you are.
We honour the culture that surrounds us.
From the Ayurvedic principles in our bedrooms to the traditional breakfast prepared by our neighbour, Sri Lanka runs through every vein of Soul Moon.
We honour the people who make it possible.
Our host. Our cook. Our gardeners. Our cleaners. Our craftspeople.
They are not just staff - they are the soul of Soul Moon.
When you stay with us, you become part of this story too.
